Pot Luck: Brighton & Hove Bags £1.4m for Smoother Roads

🚧 Good news for anyone who has ever winced at a pothole in Brighton & Hove. The Department for Transport has unlocked just over £1.4 million for resurfacing, pothole repairs and pavement improvements. The money is already part of this year's maintenance plan. It rewards the council's work and its new Local Highways Maintenance Transparency Report, which gives an honest look at the state of the city's roads. Hopefully bus routes wont have to be suspended again over pot hole concerns like earlier this year. Read BBC article.

Councillor Trevor Muten credited better technology and data for showing where investment will help most.

Here's where the £8.8 million for 2026/27 is going:

  1. Almost £4 million on road improvements

  2. £2.2 million on pothole and other urgent repairs

  3. Over £1 million on pavements

  4. £200,000 on accessibility, including dropped kerbs

  5. £360,000 on safer junctions and school streets

  6. More than £2 million on major project

By 2027/28, preventative maintenance funding is set to double.

Light Up, Brighton: Be Bright, Be Seen This Winter

🚴🏼 With the clocks back and evenings getting gloomy, Brighton & Hove Council wants everyone to avoid blending into the scenery. This week, road safety officers will be out during the evening rush hour (about 4:45pm to 6:30pm). They'll hand out free bike lights, reflective stickers and hi-vis rucksack covers to anyone cycling, walking or wheeling. Checkout Get Cycling Be Safe Be Seen Advice.

Here's where to find them:

  1. Monday: St Peter's Church area

  2. Tuesday: Church Road, Hove, near Grand Avenue

  3. Wednesday: Preston Park South

  4. Thursday: The Highway junction with Lewes Road

  5. Friday: Aquarium junction near Madeira Drive

Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service will also be there, reminding cyclists to check their lights work. The Highway Code requires a white front light and a red rear light after dark. Drivers are asked to take extra care too.

The council also points to its ongoing investment in safer streets, including the newly opened Valley Gardens phase 3 and the A259 Active Travel Scheme.

Low Low Tides

👣 It may be blowing a hoolie the next few days but Monday to Thursday this week we have some super low tides in Brighton (down to 0.7m on Tuesday) so if you’re wanting to walk along the sand, get yourself down to the beach. ‼️ However; because the wind’s up, the waves are too so best to stay clear of the water and stick to (relative ) dry land. Early morning and early evening is low tide. See full timings
