What’s the Scoop
Brighton Could Be Going Round the Bend (In a Good Way)
📍 Brighton's North Laine Community Association wants to add a permanent labyrinth to Jubilee Square, right outside the Jubilee Library. Unlike a maze, there are no dead ends or wrong turns, so nobody will need rescuing by a passing librarian.
The group hopes the free, open-to-all feature will become a "welcoming community space" where people can pause, reflect and connect. They also see it as a distinctive Brighton landmark that reflects the city's creativity, inclusiveness and focus on wellbeing. It's inspired by similar labyrinths in towns and cities around the world.
It's still just a proposal, and the team wants to hear from residents, businesses, visitors and library users, whether you're enthusiastic, unsure or full of ideas. A feedback form is available, because as the group says, your views could help shape one of Brighton's most important public spaces. Give Feedback
Brighton Fringe and Equity Sign UK-First Deal to Raise Standards
🎭 Brighton Fringe, one of the world's largest fringe festivals, has teamed up with the performing arts union Equity on a UK-first agreement. It's the first of its kind between Equity and a British fringe festival, so the curtain really is going up on something new.
Because Brighton Fringe is open-access and doesn't directly engage performers, the deal sets out a framework to help artists and venues follow best practice. It covers clear venue agreements on hire charges and box office splits, minimum wage, holiday pay, rest breaks and proper credits. It also includes new anti-harassment and Safer Spaces policies, plus longer-term green ambitions.
Equity urged other festivals to follow suit and producers for Brighton Fringe 2027 to get in touch. Festival bosses say the aim is to be the most artist-centric fringe possible.
Orionids Set to Light Up the Night Sky This Week
💫 The Orionid meteor shower peaks on 21st October, after bubbling away through October and early November. The Draconids also popped by earlier in the month.
Those "shooting stars" aren't stars at all. They're tiny specks of dust left over from the birth of our solar system, burning up in Earth's atmosphere. Make a wish on them anyway.
Planetary scientist Dr Ashley King says the best views come away from city lights, so head for the coast or a hill in the countryside (Devil’s Dyke is calling). A near-full Moon just days after the peak may spoil the show a little for us in Brighton.
Patience is key. Give your eyes at least 10 minutes to adjust to the dark, and don't give up meteor spotting too soon. Learn more about the Orionid meteor shower.
Albion's Clean Sheets Are Brewing Up a Treat for Flour Pot
☕️ Brighton's Flour Pot Bakery is enjoying the Seagulls' flying form, and it's all down to a very tasty tradition. Whenever Albion keep a clean sheet, players celebrate with a round of coffee, and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is usually the one picking up the bill. Nobody's complaining about that kind of generosity.
The bakery has been invited to the training ground to serve the first team. Mariana Katsouris told BBC Radio Sussex: "He always likes to treat the team and everyone else."
Albion sit third in the Premier League after Sunday's 5-0 thrashing of rivals Crystal Palace, their fourth game in a row without conceding in all competitions.
Katsouris called it "a great honour" to be part of the journey. As she put it, the players support a local independent business, and the bakery helps them support their goals.
