Goooood morning, Brighton. âIt's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothesâ, said Nelly, good friend of the Scoop. And if you do; head down to the naturist beach at Kemptown and take advantage of the Voy body positive initiative. Abbreviated newsletter today as like the rest of you, weâre taking advantage of the Bank Hols.

Whatâs the Scoop
Keystone laid at Royal Sussex for major milestones
đĽ NHS chiefs, staff and patients have celebrated two major milestones in the ÂŁ860m modernisation of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton: the official opening of the new emergency helipad and the start of construction for a ÂŁ250m Sussex Cancer Centre. Watch Helipad Live Opening.
The new centre, on the former Barry Building site, will have twice as many beds and serve 1.8 million people, allowing faster access to care, more treatments and expanded research.
The helipad, already in use after its helipad test landings in June, supports the hospitalâs role as the regionâs major trauma centre, as shown by its first heartâattack patient arrival.
Letâs shuck, like we did last summer (almost)
𦪠The inaugural BITE Brighton Oyster Festival launches in 2026, celebrating Sussexâs rich, sustainable seafood heritage and worldâclass coastal waters. Separate to Shuckfest which got postponed last year, this bills to be a week long celebration of all things pearly.
Running from 19â28 June, it features a ÂŁ15 walkâin oyster-and-drink deal at top venues across the city, plus unique ticketed charity events such as âCocktails and CanapĂŠs Under The Seaâ at SEA LIFE Brighton and âA Sparkling Sussex SoirĂŠeâ at Brighton Toy and Model Museum.
Englishâs of Brighton leads the charge with expert oyster pairings, and the festival culminates with the cityâs first professional oyster-shucking competition that will be hosted on East Street on the afternoon of Sunday June 28. Chefs from across Brighton and Hove are invited to participate, with the best shucker being crowned Oyster Queen or King of the Year đ Participating Venues.
Brighton Lifeguards back for the summer

đ RNLI lifeguards returned to Brighton & Hoveâs main beaches from Saturday (23 May) to 6 September, patrolling daily 10amâ6pm at Dukes Mound, Palace Pier East and West, West Street, West Pier/Bandstand and Hove Lawns. King Alfred beach remains without lifeguard cover; nearest is Hove Lawns. Saltdean, Rottingdean and West Hove/Lagoon will be lifeguarded from 18 July. Full info from the RNLI Brighton
The council and RNLI urge everyone to choose lifeguarded beaches, swim between red and yellow flags, check weather, tides and hazard signs, and use safety gear for paddleboarding, kayaking and openâwater swimming. Take a phone in a waterproof pouch, tell someone your plans, and remember âFloat to Liveâ if you fall in unexpectedly. In emergencies, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Support the RNLI
