Good morning, Brighton. So England’s World Cup dreams are over for another 4 years, tear 😢 but what we do have to look forward to on Sunday is World Ice Cream Day. Being the Brighton Scoop🍦we’re obviously giddy with excitement. Little known fact - The celebration originated in the United States in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan names the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day. So he ended the cold war and dedicated a day to ice cream. Hats off sir.

In today’s Brighton Scoop:

  • World Ice Cream Day this Sundae

  • Pride buses hit the road

  • Sussex demonstrates sustained improvement in National Student Survey

What’s the Scoop

World Ice Cream Day this Sundae

You don’t need an excuse to treat yourself in this weather but on Sunday you have one anyway with World Ice Cream Day. Treat yourself, your family, a friend, a stranger. It doesn’t matter who but do the right thing. Brighton ice cream spots:

Pride buses hit to road

Mark your calendars for August 1st and 2nd – Brighton & Hove Pride is returning in spectacular fashion! This beloved annual celebration will blanket the city with festivities, and the local bus company is pulling out all the stops with special Pride timetables and shuttle services connecting Preston Park, Old Steine, and Waterhall Campsite.

The iconic Pride bus will roll through the parade once more, now sporting fresh livery voted on by residents. It'll park near the Peace Statue at Hove Lawns, partnering with mASCot to provide a welcoming sanctuary for autistic families. Guests include representatives from Crawley Pride, Seahaven Pride, and poignantly, the partner of the late George Montague – affectionately remembered as the "oldest gay in the village."

It's shaping up to be quite the feel-good weekend!

Sussex demonstrates sustained improvement in National Student Survey

The University of Sussex is on a roll! Their latest National Student Survey results show consistent improvement across the board, with an impressive 80% response rate – the highest ever recorded.

Students gave thumbs up across all seven categories, praising teaching staff (94.5% approval for explanations), library resources (92.8%), and course organization (ranking 8th nationally). The university's strategic push on student feedback and assessment has clearly paid off, with the Student Voice theme jumping 31 places nationally to 80%. View full results.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sasha Roseneil credited the improvements to listening to students and acting on their suggestions. Even the Students' Union climbed the rankings, rising 10 places to 35th nationally.

With such strong results sustained over four years, Sussex is firmly establishing itself as a student-focused institution – music to any prospective student's ears!
