Good morning, Brighton. Well the after effects of Hurricane Isaias did deliver some unseasonably warm weather yesterday once the rain cleared which was delightful (flip flops were back on) and more is due today. But if you’re reading this an it’s still dark outside, go grab a cuppa and have a quick scan as the sun’s not up until 7.20am.

What’s the Scoop

Seagulls Spread Their Wings, and Hold Out a Guiding Hand

🐕 Brighton & Hove Albion have become the first club in the South East to complete sighted guide training with Guide Dogs. The aim is to make match days easier for supporters with sight loss.

Staff from the "Here to Help" accessibility team, reception and security joined volunteers from the Seagulls Disabled Supporters Association at the Amex Stadium. They learnt safe guiding techniques and the right language to use. Then they put on eye masks and guided each other up stairs, along stands and to seats. It was a humbling way to test their skills.

Around two million people in the UK live with sight loss, and that figure is expected to double by 2050. The club already offers audio commentary. This training means more fans, home and away, can enjoy the game with confidence.

REEF Roll Into Brighton: Place Your Hands Together!

🤘Glastonbury-born rockers REEF are hitting the road for 14 UK dates this October and November and lucky for us they'll be stopping off at Concorde 2 on 17th October, which is this Saturday!

Expect hits from a 30-year career in some very intimate venues. The band formed in 1993 and shot to fame after Naked featured in a Sony MiniDisc advert. Their 1997 album Glow went straight to number one and gave us the anthem Place Your Hands (video).

Since reforming in 2010, they've supported The Rolling Stones in Munich and headlined Glastonbury's Avalon Stage. The line-up is Gary Stringer on vocals and Jack Bessant on bass, with drummer Luke Bullen and guitarist Amy Newton. The band have arguably never sounded better. Buy Tickets ASAP

Tray Bien! Waiters Dash for Cash at Racecourse

🏃 Brighton's hospitality staff are swapping the dining room for the racetrack. On Thursday, during the Flat Racing season finale at Brighton Racecourse, waiters from across the city will race while balancing trays of food and drink. Spilling is presumably frowned upon.

BITE Sussex is organising the annual Waiters Race, which hasn't run for a few years. Racegoers can even bet on their favourite waiter or restaurant. Race takes place Thursday at 1pm.

Proceeds go to Justlife, which supports people in temporary accommodation. Its Children and Families Project helps families, many of them living in a single room, with furniture, services, appointments and support, so they don't face homelessness alone. Buy Tickets Online.

Green Light for B&H's SEND Plan

🎓 Brighton & Hove's three-year Local SEND Reform Plan has been formally approved by the Department for Education and the Department of Health and Social Care. The government said it met the required threshold and offers a sound foundation for delivery.

The plan aims to help children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities get the right support, at the right time and in the right place. Priorities include:

  1. Joining up education, health and care for those aged 0 to 25.

  2. Spotting needs earlier.

  3. Working more closely with families, with clearer information and an improved Local Offer.

Councillor Emma Daniel called it "a significant milestone". She acknowledged that too many families have faced frustrating waits and a complex system. Year one will focus on getting reforms up and running. The SEND & AP Partnership Board, which includes parent carer forum PaCC, will monitor progress.
