What’s the Scoop
Time to Have Your Say on Air Quality in Brighton
😷 In 2024, BHCC launched a real-time air quality monitoring network to better understand pollution across the city. Data from the past year shows that levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can enter the bloodstream and cause serious health problems, are on average 91% higher in winter than summer, largely due to burning solid fuels like wood and coal. Levels were also 78% higher near four primary schools.
In response, the council is consulting on a proposal to replace the city’s five existing Smoke Control Areas with one city-wide area to reduce harmful emissions. The six-week consultation launched last night on Clean Air Night (22nd January) and runs until 1 March, with opportunities for residents and businesses to share views. Take the survey and have your say to help reduce pollution levels in the site.
Scuba Diver Honoured for Conservation Work
🤿 Eric Smith, a 77-year-old diver from Brighton, has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Sussex for his role in creating what is considered the UK’s largest marine rewilding project. Smith spent years campaigning for a ban on fishing trawlers along the Sussex coast from Selsey to Hastings and co-founded the Sussex Underwater charity.
His work also inspired a documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough, highlighting the importance of marine habitats. Diving since the age of 11, Smith said he was surprised by the honour and believes his films and projects have helped people appreciate the richness of Sussex’s marine environment. He hopes his work continues to change perceptions of the sea and encourage greater protection of marine life.
Brighton Takes Top Spot for UK's Best City for a Night Out
🏖️ Brighton has been named the UK’s best city for a night out, beating l London and Manchester. A study by Ireland Prestige Tours ranked cities based on the number of nightclubs, bars and pubs per 100,000 people, hotel costs and the average price of a pint. I mean, we all know its the best but well done Brighton anyway. Is it time for a pint yet?
