Good morning, Brighton. Well I love the heat as the next person but last night was ridiculous. Time for a potter outside before it heats up again today (Amber Warning for Brighton today) and looking like we’ll have to wait until Saturday afternoon for something that resembles rain.

Anyway, let’s get to it:

What’s the Scoop

Brighton's Parking U-Turn: A Victory for the Beach-Goers

🅿️ Well, well, well—looks like someone finally listened! Brighton & Hove's east end Madeira Drive parking charges are getting a serious trim after residents and businesses collectively said "hold on a minute."

Last month's shiny new unified summer tariff was meant to streamline things, but it apparently had people reaching for their wallets in shock. A one-hour stint jumped to £5.40? No thanks.

The good news: prices are plummeting. Hourly parking drops to £2.90, four hours to a much friendlier £10.70, and all-day parking comes in at £17.20.

The best part? They're squeezing in extra parking spaces too. The trial kicks off in 3-4 weeks once the machines and paybyphone systems get updated. Well done to those who petitioned and raise the profile of this issue. 🥳

Brighton Joins National Push to Overhaul SEND Support

📚 Brighton & Hove has submitted its playbook for supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) over the next three years, aligning with the government's wider education reforms - Every Child Achieving & Thriving.

The plan aims to join up education, health, and care services—basically getting everyone on the same page instead of working in silos. Early identification is key: spot needs faster, deliver support sooner.

The council's also promised clearer information and better partnerships with families, with a three-phase rollout: mobilise, implement, embed.

The catch? They're calling for national help, especially recruiting specialists in educational psychology and therapy—jobs notoriously tricky to fill.

Councillor Emma Daniel summed it up: demand for SEND support keeps climbing, and while current practice is solid, there's room to improve. The goal's straightforward—every child gets what they need to thrive.

Brighton Gets £4 Million Boost for High-Rise Building Safety

👷🏽 Brighton & Hove has landed over £4 million in government funding to spruce up the outer walls of its high-rise residential buildings, with another £2 million expected to follow.

The money's part of a national fire safety initiative, and here's the plan: councillors are being asked to greenlight design and planning work on up to 9 residential towers across the city. Read full report.

Good news first—none of Brighton's blocks have the dangerous cladding that plagued Grenfell Tower. Instead, the funding will tackle aging spandrel panels, balcony infills, and stairwell panelling to meet modern safety standards.

The council's also setting up a specialist team of fire engineers and façade experts to oversee the work, which includes appointing contractors for the actual improvements.

While residents aren't in immediate danger, this proactive upgrade will future-proof buildings and ease the financial burden of ongoing fire safety maintenance. Councillors vote Monday 29 June.
