What’s the Scoop
Sonay Kartal's Epic Wimbledon Run
🎾 Sonay Kartal's Wimbledon journey concluded with a fourth-round loss to Russian veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who won 7-6 (3) 6-4. The match was marred by an electronic line-calling error, prompting Pavlyuchenkova to allege home bias. Despite the controversy, Pavlyuchenkova reached the quarter-finals for the first time in nine years.
The Brighton based player, Kartal, playing her first Centre Court match, demonstrated amazing resilience but couldn't overtook the experienced Pavlyuchenkova. Although disappointed, Kartal will achieve a career-high ranking and expressed pride in her performance, gaining confidence and motivation for future competitions.
Sonay plays at the Pavilion & Avenue Tennis Club but we’re blessed with many courts in Brighton so grab a racket and get your kids down to a court for a knock. You never know where it could lead! Take a look at Brighton Tennis Courts.

🧜♀️ On July 5, 2025, a shimmering school of mermaids, mermen, and sea creatures swam—or rather, strutted—along Brighton's seafront in the ‘March of the Mermaids 2025’. Undeterred by the wind and grey skies, the dazzling parade, led by Honour Mission, aimed to spotlight marine conservation and support causes like the Wave Project.
The celebration ended at the Fortune of War pub, where the high spirits continued. Aless, fresh from London, revelled in her first fin-tastic adventure, celebrating its vibrant, women-centred vibe. Meanwhile, Brighton local Andy cherished the parade's footloose format, adding a splash of fun to marine awareness.
March of the Mermaids couldn’t be more Brighton if it tried. So fabulous.
