Good morning, Brighton. Glad we all made it through Saturday’s monsoon like conditions. Still unsettled this week but clearing up for Could be Real Festival and Glorious Day Festival next Fri & Sat.

In today’s Brighton Scoop:

  • Patrol boats to hit the water

  • Padel courts coming to harbour site

  • Groundsman to run 100 miler with stoma

What’s the Scoop

Patrol boats to hit the water

🚤 It might not quite be Baywatch but Brighton's beaches are getting their very own nautical neighbourhood watch. A patrol boat is being relaunched on Brighton & Hove's coastal waters, with patrols set to begin before the end of June — just in time for the pier-to-pier swim on 27 June. 🏊

The council-operated vessel will work alongside the Brighton RNLI Lifeguard Service during peak summer periods, keeping a weather eye on everything from rogue inflatables and errant paddleboarders to illegal jet ski antics and bathing bylaw breaches.

It's all part of a broader seafront safety package that includes extended CCTV coverage, sea safety training for local schoolchildren, and increased patrols by the RNLI beach lifeguards — who'll be on the water until at least 6 September.

Cllr David McGregor called the seafront the city's "shop window" and said keeping it safe is "absolutely vital." Sounds like the pier-fect approach to us. RNLI Water Safety Tips

Padel courts coming to harbour site

🎾 Shoreham's getting a smashing new addition.

Club Padel has snapped up more than an acre at Fishermans Wharf in Brighton Road, Shoreham, with planning consent secured for an indoor club featuring six courts, changing rooms, parking, and a high-end bar overlooking the action. Works are already underway, with opening scheduled for autumn 2026.

Flude Property Consultants director Andrew Halfacree noted that finding suitable indoor court space in the Brighton, Hove and Shoreham area has been "particularly challenging" given the physical constraints of the region — making this waterside plot quite the catch. Club Padel director Alan McGuiness called it a "much-needed" facility for the area. Not sure what padel is? Watch this.

Padel has seen explosive growth over the past five years and is widely described as the world's fastest-growing sport. It’ll be a great addition to this previously industrial plot.

Groundsman to run 100 miler with stoma

🏃‍♂️ Brighton's head groundsman Richard Langley is swapping the turf for the South Downs next weekend, taking on the 100-mile South Downs Way ultramarathon — with a world record in his sights. Langley, 53, is aiming to become the fastest person ever to run 100 miles with a stoma, needing to finish in under 29 hours to claim the unofficial record.

But records are secondary to his real mission: raising awareness of bowel cancer and smashing the stigma around stomas. Diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in December 2024 — after showing no symptoms until mid-race at a 45-miler — his surgeon called him "a ticking timebomb." What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?

Now in recovery and running with a bag, Langley says: "Life with a stoma doesn't limit strength, ambition or possibility." He's already raised £1350 for Bowel Cancer UK. Next, 100 miles. Go Richard! 💪 Donate to Bowel Cancer UK
