What’s the Scoop
BHCC Schedule Cycle to Work Day
🚲 Brighton & Hove is promoting Cycle to Work Day on Thursday, 7 August, encouraging commuters to bicycle to their destinations. Activities include a workplace photo competition with a chance to win a cycle repair stand, bike breakfasts at Carats Café and Lost in the Lanes, and a special Beryl Bikes offer. Participants can use the city’s online cycle map for navigation.
Councillor Trevor Muten highlights the health benefits and emission reduction of cycling, inviting residents to embrace the good weather to commute by bike and help improve air quality in the city one cycle at a time.

Baker’s Apprenticeship Launched at Plumpton
👩🏼🍳 Plumpton College has launched the UK's first advanced baker apprenticeship, a level 3 program focusing on technical baking, leadership, and management skills. Developed with employers, the course aims to prepare students for senior roles in commercial bakeries through problem-solving, marketing, and product innovation.
The apprenticeship, beginning this week, combines real-world learning in state-of-the-art facilities, covering artisan sourdough, leadership, and food safety. Plumpton's program partners with The Flour Pot Bakery and The Bread Factory, emphasising long-term industry skills development. Applicants must work in a bakery role and meet educational prerequisites. More details are available through Plumpton College's business services. Open Day available on 11th October - More Info Here
Madeira Terrace Has Lift Off
🛗 Work has begun on installing a fully accessible lift as part of the Madeira Terrace restoration project, aimed at improving long-term seafront access that kicked off in at the end of last year. This complex heritage initiative is hopefully completing phase one next year at some point.
A key element is the lift, enhancing accessibility from Marine Parade to Madeira Drive. Current work involves preparing the lift shaft and requires temporary closure of the Royal Crescent Steps from 30 July to 13 August and 26 August to 9 September. Councillor Julie Cattell highlights the project's ambition and the commitment to making the seafront accessible for everyone. The design of the lift has ruffled a few feathers with questions around it’s design not being in keeping but we think it strikes a good balance and is much needed for accessibility.
