Good morning, Brighton. It’s National Banana Bread Day. 🍌 Who’d have thought they’d give that little mid morning snack its own day! It’s also end of half term so those with kids definitely deserve 5 mins peace for a cuppa and a read.

What’s the Scoop

Brighton Boxing Girl Off to Champs

🥊 Brighton’s own rising star, 18-year-old boxer Isabel Mitchell, has claimed victory at Sweden’s Golden Girl Boxing Championships, beating competition from 500 female amateurs. Training at Brighton & Hove Boxing Gym in the King Alfred Leisure Centre, Isabel found boxing by chance after watching her younger brother – and never looked back.

Once sidelined in “old school” clubs that prioritised boys, she now thrives in a welcoming, female-friendly environment that’s boosted her confidence and mental health. With national medals, international bouts and major tournament wins already under her belt, she hopes to turn professional and inspire more local girls to get active, as part of the Sport Lifts Her Higher campaign. New Acute Medical Unit Opens at RSCH

🏥 A new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) has opened at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, marking a key milestone in a £62 million, six-year upgrade of urgent and emergency care. Long-serving nurse Sister Gladys Gonsalves cut the ribbon, reflecting on the service’s journey from the old Barry Building to the modern facility.

The AMU, on level 5 of the Millennium Wing, assesses and treats patients quickly with scans, tests and specialist input, helping them start recovery sooner and often return home the same day. It will care for around 500 patients a week and includes a 24/7 Medical Same Day Emergency Care unit, easing pressure on A&E, which now sees over 100,000 patients a year. While the main A&E is renovated in phases until 2029, hospital bosses warn of a challenging few years but say the improvements are essential for future care.

Urinal Makes a Splash

🚾 Brighton being Brighton, even the toilets have a fanbase. The Green Door Store flogged its 15-year-old urinal on eBay, billing it as a “truly spectacular” slice of local rock ’n’ roll history allegedly used by stars like Matty Healy, Sam Fender and Mac DeMarco. After 36 bids, “Cavey and all his mates” snapped it up for £180.20, planning to install it at a friend’s house that regularly hosts parties and front-room gigs – either as a working loo or a flowerbed.

The venue bid a fond farewell on their Insta, delighted their “old friend” will live on at house parties across Brighton. As someone who also has history with that urinal, may it live on for another 15 years. 🤘
