What’s the Scoop
Naturist beach set for a glow-up
🍑 Fab news for anyone who wants to let it all hang out this summer; Brighton’s naturist beach is getting a summer refresh with a free beach-essentials scheme running from 23 May to 14 July. Visitors can borrow sun loungers, beach chairs, towels, yoga mats and tote bags via Bison Bar, making the area more accessible and welcoming, especially for newcomers.
The initiative is a partnership between digital healthcare provider Voy and the naturist beach, aimed at tackling body image stigma and low body confidence. New research suggests 8.2 million Brits plan to avoid beaches and pools this summer due to body insecurities, and the campaign hopes to challenge this by promoting inclusivity, body diversity and wellbeing.
Brighton’s naturist beach is open to everyone, not just experienced naturists, and the revamp reflects a wider shift towards body positivity, outdoor wellbeing and accessible staycation experiences as UK heatwaves become more common. Read the full article in Verge Online

🪰 Jeff Goldblum’s new album Night Blooms is released on 5 June 2026, and he’ll celebrate with two meet-and-greet/signing sessions at Resident in Brighton that day at 4:30pm and 6:15pm.
The Night Blooms World Tour will visit Wolverhampton, Glasgow, Manchester and London’s Royal Albert Hall, where he’ll perform with a 50+ piece orchestra. Night Blooms follows 2025’s Still Blooming, which hit #1 on the Official Jazz & Blues Albums Chart. Watch Jeff’s & & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra in action.
The album, recorded with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, features Goldblum on piano and occasional vocals, plus star collaborators including Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Scarlett Johansson, Charlie Puth and others. Fresh from playing The Wizard in Wicked, Goldblum is turning his long-standing love of jazz into a full-blown second career, with the tour promising intimate, Hollywood-tinged nights of music and storytelling. Nominations open for Freedom of the City Award
🏆 We (as in residents) can now nominate outstanding individuals for Brighton & Hove’s Freedom of the City Award, one of the council’s highest civic honours, recognising exceptional service or achievement that significantly benefits the city and its people. Nominations are open until Sunday 19 July 2026.
Previous resident-nominated recipients include Emily Kenward, who founded Time to Talk Befriending and has supported over 3,500 lonely and isolated older people across Brighton, Hove, Adur and Worthing, and Mesfin Abraham Ghebre-Ghiorghis, honoured for 37 years’ service to the council and his commitment to race equality and local democracy. The city has also recently honoured Brighton & Hove Albion FC and suffragette Mary Clarke.
Council Leader Bella Sankey is urging residents to put forward inspiring people and “unsung heroes”. Group leaders will review nominations and make recommendations, with final decisions made at a special Full Council meeting in November 2026. If you know someone serving - submit a nomination.
We have a new mayor
👸 Councillor Theresa Fowler has been appointed Mayor of Brighton & Hove, succeeding Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, with Councillor Tobias Sheard as Deputy Mayor and likely future youngest-ever mayor. Theresa Fowler, a lifelong resident and councillor since 2019, has championed recycling, plastic reduction, community clean-ups, and secured a ban on sky lanterns and balloon releases to protect wildlife.
Her mayoral priorities include housing, road safety, the environment and support for children and families. She will support local charities Forward Facing and Whoopsadaisy, with Reverend Tom Holbird as chaplain and her sister, nurse Lorraine Garrett, as consort.
