What’s the Scoop
Jamming
🇯🇲 Legendary Julian Marley & The Uprising are perfoming tonight (Wed 3 June), 6pm at Chalk. Son of Bob Marley, Julian is a Grammy-nominated reggae singer-songwriter and self-taught multi-instrumentalist. Rooted in conscious roots-reggae, his sound blends his British upbringing with Jamaican heritage.
Highlights include debut Lion in the Morning (1996), A Time & Place (2003), and Grammy-nominated Awake (2009). He's part of Ghetto Youths International alongside brothers Ziggy, Stephen, and Damian, and has contributed to Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Tickets still available
B&H - a UK clean air success story
💨 Brighton's breathing easy (and showing off a little) having landed second place in the UK's clean air league table created from research by electric vehicle charge point operator Believ. The city slashed fine particle pollution (PM2.5) by a whopping 41% between 2017–19 and 2022–24, already beating the government's 2030 targets ahead of schedule. Great news for us.
Helping lead the charge is the city's EV charging network — the best outside London — with thousands more points planned. Smoke Control Areas are also expanding citywide from winter 2026, tackling pollution from wood burners and fireplaces. View the full data.
The one cloud on the horizon? Nobody's hit the tougher WHO targets yet. But with ambitions to reach 5 µg/m³, Brighton isn't slowing down — it's just getting started. 🌿
Overnight city cleaning teams sweep into town
🧹 Brighton and Hove City Council has launched a new overnight deep cleaning service for the city centre — because some messes just won't wait for business hours.
The team tackles areas too busy to clean properly during the day, focusing on jet-washing streets, removing graffiti, and repainting street furniture. Following a successful trial, they've kicked off at the bus stops by Churchill Square, working up towards Montpellier Road.
The approach mirrors models already used in Westminster and popular European cities. Daytime crews continue handling litter, fly-tipping, and general hygiene, while the overnight squad handles the deeper, more disruptive work. It’s great to see this kick off so swiftly after cabinet discussions only taking place back in March.
Deputy leader Cllr Tim Rowkins said residents and businesses want a cleaner city centre — and the council is "determined to deliver just that." Consider it Brighton's beauty sleep routine. ✨
