What’s the Scoop
Cunning as a fox
🦊 Doorbell footage from Philip Wells in Shaftesbury Road, Brighton, shows foxes cleverly unlocking his food waste bin despite it being secured in both available lock positions. Previously, Wells had deterred wildlife by placing a brick on the lid, but once a passer-by removed it, foxes managed to break in, scattering peelings and teabags across his path. He was astonished at how quickly the fox learned to open the caddy. Residents have reported similar scavenging in larger orange-lidded food waste bins in nearby streets, where urban foxes are common.
BHCC said the bins are mostly effective but foxes are highly intelligent. They recommend placing something heavy on the lid, moving the caddy higher out of reach, 😂 or keeping it indoors where fox problems persist. View the footage of the fox outsmarting a food waste bin
Tragic events on the seafront
🛟 Although we generally focus on the positive news in Brighton in the Scoop, Wednesday’s unfortunate incident with the loss of three lives highlighted once again the danger the sea. For the safety of all beachgoers, here are a few points to remember. Although we’re swiftly approaching the summer, the water is still cold at approximately 13 degrees. Be mindful when entering the sea, this can chill you rapidly and result in the loss of feeling of you extremities. At high tide there is a steep shelf which can mean you’re out of your depth within a couple of meters. Again at high tide if the conditions are rough, a heavy shore dump can occur which easily knocks you off your feet and the resultant current can wash you along and out to sea. We say - If in doubt, stay out. More water safety tips from the RNLI
The RNLI lifeguard service begins on 23rd May at Dukes Mound Beach,Palace Pier East Beach, Palace Pier West Beach, West Street Beach, West Pier Beach, Hove Lawns Beach & King Alfred Beach. Full details of lifeguard duties during the summer months
Saltdean Lido wins architectural award
The fabulous Saltdean Lido, was named one of 6 winners of the 2026 RIBA South East Award following a £11m, 14-year restoration funded by community donations and the National Lottery. The RIBA Awards, now in their 60th year, honour the UK’s best new architecture, with president Chris Williamson saying they celebrate projects that set new standards for how we live and shape communities. Other South East winners include St Raphael's health and wellbeing centre (Building of the Year), Casa Bassa, High House, Clay Rise, and The Richard Cairns Building. Regional winners now go forward for RIBA National Awards.
The Grade II listed Art Deco building is iconic as you drive through Saltdean and hosts weekly events. It was recently announced that Reading Room was to open a new cafe offering at Saltdean Lido following on from their success at Black Rock. Another reason to get down there. Full list of events
