⛺️ Eight Brighton & Hove charities are reuniting for Make Change Count 2026/2027—a feel-good campaign that's been turning spare change into serious support since 2016. Think of it as the city's answer to "what do I do when someone asks for money on the street?"

The genius bit? Every penny goes directly to frontline workers—no admin costs, no middlemen. £5 buys a rough sleeper a hot meal; £25 funds proper one-to-one support. The campaign has already raised over £100,000, and it's back for another round.

Eight stellar charities—from Clock Tower Sanctuary to YMCA Brighton—are pooling resources to offer everything from emergency digs to mental health support. It's teamwork at its finest: practical, compassionate, and genuinely life-changing for people facing homelessness in the city. Donate

🥬 The BrightonFoodStory festival kicks off on 2nd October with ambitious plans to reshape how the city thinks about what it eats. It's not just about trendy brunch spots—though Brighton's vibrant café scene certainly helps.

Climate:Change, the city's think tank, has been connecting surprisingly deep dots: food systems account for a third of global emissions, but more importantly, they're a window into how cities organise themselves. Health, biodiversity, waste, inequality, politics—it all traces back to what's on our plates.

Brighton's food flows through three channels: supermarkets (feeding most people affordably), institutional catering (schools, hospitals, unis), and hospitality (1,200 commercial establishments). The clever bit? Getting them working together rather than against each other. If the council coordinates effectively as buyer, convener, and planner, it can reshape the entire food economy without heavy-handed regulation. Brighton could become Europe's sustainability pathfinder—practice what it preaches, essentially.

🛟 Yesterday signalled the end of the summer service from the fab Brighton RNLI Lifeguards. Since May half term they’ve kept a watchful eye on water users from Saltdean to West Hove at their 10 lifeguard towers dotted along the seafront. They’ve been a pleasure to chat to this summer and often don’t get the recognition they deserve for their constant vigilance, so a big thank-you from the Scoop. 🙏

The high profile incidents that sadly occurred along our stretch of the coast, once again highlighted the danger is can present and awareness needed of the sea before entering the water. The RNLI provide a great overview of water safety for those who need a refresh and as mentioned in a past edition, donations are always welcome for this very deserving charity.
