What’s the Scoop
Brighton dog free exclusion zones
🦮 Doggy dilemma alert in Brighton & Hove: the council's asking for your views on whether its dog control order should stick around for another three years.
Brought in back in 2023, the Public Space Protection Order keeps dogs out of spots like play areas, some parks, cemeteries, summer beach sections and Queen's Park at certain times.
It's due to expire on 19 October 2026, and the council wants to renew it until 2029, plus extend it to cover the fenced area of Blakers Park (which had a PSPO on it for 40+ years but a council mistake meant the order lapsed) and parts of Preston Park, including the cricket pitch. We think dogs are great but the fenced off area of Blakers Park should be kept for children to play and picnic in without the worry of dog mess. Have your say
Plastic wet wipe ban
🚽 Flush news, everyone: the plastic wet wipe ban is coming next spring, and water bosses are chuffed — but they're begging you not to get complacent about your loo habits.
Southern Water reckons it removes out a billion wet wipes a year from south east sewers, enough to wrap round the Earth four and a half times, weighing as much as 30 blue whales. Even "flushable" wipes are troublemakers, snagging in pipes and teaming up with fat and grease to build fatbergs. Wipes caused 59% of blockages between 2020-25 — over 91,000 incidents. More on wet wipes and blockages
FOG manager Matt Collins says the plastic ban is welcome but doesn't go far enough, given the £200m annual industry clean-up bill and 20 wipes found per 100 metres of UK coastline.
The advice remains delightfully simple: stick to the three Ps — pee, paper and poo — and let the bin handle the rest.
