Good morning, Brighton. School’s back tomorrow and with it the summer holidays come to an end. And breath! It’s still looking mild for the foreseeable so hopefully plenty more evenings and weekends at the beach to be had. But if that’s not you cup of tea then we have plenty of live music on the horizon so grab your coffee and have a peruse below.
In today’s Brighton Scoop:
Chip shop chippy goes full gluten-free
Old paintbrushes, unite!
Reading Room canopy get a 5 year reprieve

What’s the Scoop
Chip shop chippy goes full gluten-free
…and it's taken a decade of batter-tinkering to get there! Ramiz Khalil, who's run Nano Fish & Chips near Brighton's London Road station since 2015, has turned his fryers over entirely to gluten-free, ditching the "just another option" approach for a proper dedicated kitchen.
Cue new suppliers, pricier ingredients and some menu casualties — but Khalil's refused to hike prices. His holy grail batter (dairy and egg-free, too) took years to get crisp and golden like the "real deal." There's even a nod to the vegan-coeliac crowd. Proof that Brighton's food scene takes allergens seriously — and that chips really can be for everyone. Pop along and support Ramiz Khalil’s bold move.
Old paintbrushes, unite!
Jackson's Art's brilliant ArtCycl scheme — a hit at its Dalston shop — has now spread its wings to Hove, Stroud and Gloucester. The idea's simple and rather lovely: donate your gently used art materials, and they're either sold on cheap or handed to charities, schools and community groups, keeping perfectly good supplies out of landfill.
Shop manager Nathalie Kowal reckons it's been "incredibly popular," giving artists an easy way to pass things on while helping others grab affordable kit. Every penny raised goes to Arts for Dementia, which runs creative sessions for people with dementia and their carers. So next time you're clearing out that cupboard of half-used paints and dusty brushes, pop into your nearest participating Jackson's and donate them. Also look out for the ArtCycl sticker on pre-loved bargains waiting for a second life. What a fab initiative to get behind.
Reading Room canopy get a 5 year reprieve
☕️ The Reading Room on Madeira Drive has finally won retrospective consent for the canopies, outdoor bar and kitchen prep area it installed without permission, sparking a council enforcement probe back in March. Heritage aficionados weren't thrilled, grumbling the canopies clash with the Grade II listed 1835 building's looks — but planners called the harm minor and let it stand until 2031, when everything must come down and repairs be made. Read about the 2024 reopening.
The café-restaurant, chuffed after an "outpouring of support," thanked fans for battling on its behalf and says it's simply keeping the once-derelict seafront gem in good, shady use. Big fans of the Reading Room here at The Scoop and glad that common sense has prevailed. Checkout the wonderful Reading Room
