Good morning, Brighton. So October arrived yesterday (apparently it’s an annual thing) and with it came International Coffee Day. Now I did potter round a few cafes to see if anything exciting was happening but I didn’t get a whiff of celebration in any of them. So perhaps we need to spearhead a city-wide celebration for Oct 1st 2027 to give thanks for that cup of joe that kick starts so many of our days? Thoughts?
Shall we organise a city-wide coffee day celebration in '27

What’s the Scoop
Bat, Ball and Barrier-Busting: Sussex's Alexia Walker Bowls Over Stereotypes 🏏
Sussex women's head coach Alexia Walker, named by the ECB as one of 53 women changing the game, is backing the Sport Lifts Her Higher campaign. She wants more women and girls to give cricket a go.
Walker took up the sport at primary school and was playing for Sussex within six months. She was often the only girl on the team. Today, Brighton & Hove has hundreds of clubs with girls' sections, plus women's, softball and evening sessions.
The campaign tackles a stark gap: girls miss out on 1.4 hours of sport a week compared with boys, which adds up to 52 football matches a year. Local role models like Georgia Adams and Chiara Green are helping to change that.
Walker's pitch is simple: cricket builds resilience, teamwork and leadership. And, as she points out, "we don't play when it's raining". 🌧️ Find out more about women & girls can get involved in cricket at Sussex Cricket.
Brighton & Hove Celebrates the Everyday Heroes of Black History Month 🎉
Black History Month kicks off yesterday, and Hove and Brighton town halls will be flying the flag all month long.
The city has plenty planned, including music, poetry readings, book festivals, history talks and family days. There's something for everyone. View all listings in East Sussex.
This year's theme shines a light on the people who often go unseen: volunteers, teachers, nurses, carers and community organisers who quietly keep everything ticking along.
Councillor Mitchie Alexander also highlighted a new Civic Leadership Programme, launched in July to boost Black and Asian representation in civic roles. By happy coincidence, its first meeting is today. Talk about good timing! ⏰
Early Music, Big Dreams: BREMF Turns Brighton into a Baroque Wonderland 🎻
The Brighton Early Music Festival returns with Bringers of Dreams, serving up 30 live events across Brighton and Hove from 2nd to 25th October.
It opens on 2 October with City of Dreams, a trip through Renaissance Florence, followed by Purcell's The Fairy Queen on 9 October. The Dream Lab (4 October) lets artists test bold ideas on a live audience, including a shadow-puppet Christmas show.
Expect a 17th-century solar system in The Planets (Pre-imagined), a day marking 400 years since Dowland's death, and Fabrica's free One Song installation featuring songs from refugee and migrant communities.
Families get their own treats too. Full details are at bremf.org.uk/whats-on.
Ground Control to Brighton: Bowie Finally Gets Let Back In 🚀
Fifty-odd years after being banned from Brighton Dome, David Bowie is making a triumphant return. Well, sort of.

David Bowie: You're Not Alone will run at the Corn Exchange from 16 July to 30 August 2027. Produced by Lightroom and authorised by the Bowie Estate, this 360-degree experience draws on rare, unseen material from the David Bowie Archive in New York.
Expect immersive audio from sound designer Gareth Fry, plus footage, photographs, drawings and personal notes, all organised into chapters on theatricality, spirituality and creativity.
The ban followed a 1973 concert that left the venue damaged. Dome boss Lucy Davies calls it "a homecoming". Director Mark Grimmer says the show celebrates Bowie as a champion of human creativity, not an alien. Tickets go on general sale at 12pm today (2nd Oct).
