What’s the Scoop
Bar Dedicated to Women’s Sport Opens
🙋🏻♀️ Crossbar Brighton, the UK’s first bar dedicated to women’s sport, opened on February 6 on Upper North Street. Created by married couple Lucy and Pippa Tallant, the bar’s Winter Olympic-themed launch event sold out in four minutes.
Crossbar aims to be a welcoming home for fans to watch, celebrate and connect through women’s sport, while also offering good wine and a relaxed place to socialise. The couple created the venue after realising that, although Brighton had each of these elements separately, there wasn’t a single space that brought them all together. Take a Peek
Local Pair Honoured at St James’s Palace
👑 Two Brighton & Hove City Council employees, Cheryl Mehta and Lucas Allison, were invited to a royal reception at St James’s Palace celebrating the contribution of local and regional government staff. Cheryl, a recruitment consultant for diverse talent, BME Workers Forum chair and care officer at Ireland Lodge, spoke to the King, Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester about her work on equity, inclusion and diversity. She expressed pride in serving her hometown community.
Lucas, a homelessness prevention officer who has personal experience of homelessness after leaving care, highlighted the challenges in the sector and the importance of secure housing. He praised the dedication of colleagues working with limited resources and said he loves his varied, people-focused role. Council chief executive Jess Gibbons said Cheryl and Lucas represent the very best of local government in Brighton & Hove. Well done Cheryl & Lucas.
Clean Energy Investment Comes A Step Closer
♻️ Brighton & Hove City Council is seeking a Strategic Energy Partnership to attract major investment to decarbonise buildings and transport, cut emissions and bills, and boost the local economy. The council’s new energy prospectus invites input from potential investors and delivery partners to accelerate over 100 projects identified in the city’s Decarbonisation Pathways Study.
Plans include a city centre heat network serving major public and commercial buildings, a 10-hectare solar farm, extensive rooftop solar, large-scale energy-efficiency retrofits, heat pump installations in thousands of properties, and expanded EV charging infrastructure. The partnership could create around 2,500 jobs, deliver cleaner air, warmer homes and businesses, and support Brighton & Hove’s transition away from fossil fuels within a strong national and regional policy framework.
