What’s the Scoop
VE Day celebrations
🎉 Brighton and Hove is set to host a week of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day). On May 8, 1945, an announcement by Prime Minister Winston Churchill marked the end of World War II in Europe, bringing home 3.8 million British men and 400,000 women. This year’s celebrations will honor their bravery and celebrate the freedom, unity, and resilience they fought for.
Eighty years later, the nation will gather to pay tribute to those who served in the war. Brighton and Hove City Council describes the occasion as "particularly poignant" as it may be one of the last chances to honour living World War II veterans. The council highlights the city's proud history of commemorating VE Day and emphasises the importance of honouring the sacrifices made for the freedom enjoyed today.
VE Day celebrations at Brighton Palace Pier will host a range of activities - including 1940’s playlist on pier radio, old newsreel footage on a big screen during daytime and evening showings of black and white classic cinema. Pop down for a trip back in time.
The Brighton Open Air Theatre Opens Again
🎭 The fabulous 400-seat theatre in Dyke Road Park opened again on Friday 2nd May for its 11th season. Popular with locals and visitors, the open air theatre is home to a ‘boat’ load of shows through-out the summer until the 21st September.
The brainchild of Brighton playwright, Adrian Bunting who died of pancreatic cancer in 2013 and donated his life savings to get the project up and running with the help of friends, the venue champions local artists and accessibility for all. What’s On.
