Good morning, Brighton. Once again it looks like we have another heat wave inbound next week so get out this weekend whilst it’s comfortable as there are more fairs, festivals and markets on than you can shake a stick at. Also, happy birthday Tom Cruise. 64 today! How does he look so young? Answers on a postcard.

In today’s Brighton Scoop:

  • 18 walks accessible by bus from Brighton

What’s the Scoop

BHCC is encouraging you to ‘Hop on, venture out’

🚌 Brighton & Hove is shaking up your weekend plans with their new "Hop on, venture out" campaign. They are making it easier than ever to ditch the car and swap traffic jams for fresh air.

Whether you’re craving a breezy coastal stroll or a cheeky hike in the South Downs, the council has mapped out 18 beautiful routes accessible by bus. Their website is a treasure trove, featuring downloadable maps, route details, and a handy walking app to keep you on track. It’s a brilliant way to boost your fitness, improve our city's air quality, and enjoy a bit of local nature without the parking stress. So, grab your bus pass, lace up those trainers, and get adventuring!

Banksy or no Banksy

🖼️ Well, that mystery was short-lived! The speculation surrounding the mysterious new mural on Hove seafront has officially been put to rest. While many fans were hopeful that the police-officer-painting-a-heart design marked a triumphant return to the area for the elusive street artist, Banksy’s representatives have confirmed it is not his work. Take a look, what do you think?

Despite the lack of an official "Banksy" tag, the community seems perfectly happy to embrace it. Local residents have praised the piece as a fantastic improvement to the area, noting that it certainly brightens up the wall. So, while it won’t be netting a six-figure sum at auction, it’s clearly still a win for Hove’s local art scene!

Sussex Uni strike ballot underway

🎓 Tensions are rising at the University of Sussex as staff head to the ballot box over plans to slash 200 jobs. Following a decline in student numbers, management is aiming to trim £35 million from the annual budget, but the University and College Union (UCU) isn't taking it lying down.

The UCU is urging a "yes" vote for strike action, arguing that compulsory redundancies are avoidable. They’ve suggested smarter alternatives, like trimming the hefty senior management pay bill instead of cutting frontline roles. With voting open until mid-August, the mood on campus is definitely strained. Students and staff alike are worried that sacrificing the very people who make the university special is a short-sighted move for the institution's future.
