Good morning, Brighton. A great weekend all round for the city with the festival in full swing after its second full weekend, the Spiegel Gardens buzzing late into the night, and Brighton winning 3-0 against Wolves. Can we make it to Europe?

Whatâs the Scoop
Waste Collections in the City - Have Your Say
đŽ BHCC is asking residents for their views on a proposal to move household rubbish collections from weekly to fortnightly. This follows major improvements to waste services, including citywide free food waste collections, added plastic items in recycling, and new vehicles and technology. As more waste is now recycled, refuse bin volumes are falling, in line with most UK councils where 80% already collect rubbish less frequently, boosting recycling rates. Any change would only affect household rubbish: weekly food waste, recycling, communal bins, flat collections and medical waste collections would remain the same.
Residents can share their views through an online survey and engagement events before a further report goes to Cabinet in the summer. This is an important one so we urge everyone to submit their opinions ASAP.
**Take Part in the Online Survey - Deadline 20th May**
Council to Consider New Air Quality Measures
đ¨ Councillors in Brighton & Hove will next week consider creating a single, citywide Smoke Control Area (SCA) to cut harmful fine particle (PM2.5) pollution from burning solid fuels. Local monitoring shows PM2.5 levels are 91% higher in the heating season, with most of the city experiencing at least 40 days above World Health Organisation guidelines last winter. PM2.5 from wood burners and open fires increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and lung disease and contributes to 1 in 20 deaths among overâ30s.
The proposed SCA would replace five older, smaller zones and cover the whole built-up urban area. It would not ban wood burners but limit use to DEFRA-approved fuels (check if yours are DEFRA-approved) and appliances. The aim is to protect public health, particularly children, older people and those with existing conditions.
Brightonâs Naked Bike Ride Postponed :(
đ Just when we were preparing ourselves for this years chance to let it all hang out whilst having a pootle around the city, the 2026 Brighton Naked Bike Ride has been postponed due to safety concerns caused by a clash with another protest and a counter-protest planned for the same day. Organisers said they could not guarantee rider safety and therefore felt they had no choice but to postpone. More Information on the postponement.
They intend to reschedule for late summer or early autumn rather than cancel, emphasising the rideâs role as a protest against fossil fuel culture and stressing the work needed to ensure a safe, joyful and effective event. They thanked supporters for their understanding. đ
