What’s the Scoop

Primary Schools Begin Growing Food

🥕 Five Brighton & Hove primary schools are launching year-long food-growing projects funded by Little Tums, creating garden areas where children grow fruit, vegetables and herbs from seed to plate. The scheme, coordinated by Our City, Our World and supported by the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, builds on Goldstone Primary’s success.

It aims to improve children’s physical and mental health, boost learning and confidence, teach sustainability, cut food waste through composting, and strengthen connections with nature and the local community. Such a great idea to get the kids actively engaged. Read the Food Strategy Action Plan on the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership website and see how you can get involved.

Brighton Street Art Tribute to Jesse

🎨 A small street-art tribute to Jesse, a young Brighton graffiti artist who died, has grown into a city-wide memorial. After Jesse’s original artwork was painted over during a new graffiti collaboration involving Indelible Fine Art, Endless and actor Luke Evans, the team chose to honour him rather than let the piece be lost. They funded billboards across Brighton so Jesse’s name, story and art could be seen more widely, developed in close collaboration with Heather, who was close to him.

The project highlights how grief and remembrance live within street art culture. A private view at Indelible Fine Art on Friday 13 February will share more about Jesse, with proceeds going to mental health charity YoungMinds.

Victoria Gardens Gets Summer Drinks License… Phew

🍺 Brighton and Hove City Council has granted itself a month-long alcohol licence for Victoria Gardens to cover Brighton Festival and Fringe, from late April to early June, after the sole objection was withdrawn, cancelling a planned hearing. The licence allows alcohol sales and entertainment daily from 10am to 11pm, alongside an existing late-night refreshment licence for hot food and drink until up to 2am on weekends.

The southern gardens are set to host a Spiegelgarden-style event instead of the Ladyboys of Bangkok, who will move to Preston Park. A separate application will be considered for drink sales outside St Peter’s Church.

With today looking like a sunny one, the thoughts of May’s Fringe & Festival are making me salivate.
