Good morning, Brighton. Here we are again. Exhausted and the week hasn’t even kicked off but these little gems will get us fired up - Eng v Croatia on Wednesday, Sustainable Gastronomy Day (it’s a thing) on Thursday and Summer Solstice on Sunday.

Grab a coffee and let’s get to it:

What’s the Scoop

Could you lead the city’s Business Growth Board?

🏙️ Brighton & Hove is hunting for an experienced leader to chair its Business Growth Board—a pivotal role at a crucial moment for the city's economy. The successful candidate will champion inclusive, sustainable growth and help shape delivery of the local Economic Plan.

The Chair will lead quarterly meetings, act as principal advocate for business interests at local, regional and national levels, and foster collaboration across business, public, voluntary, community and academic sectors.

You'll need significant senior leadership experience, strong economic development credentials, and proven board chairing skills. Crucially, genuine commitment to diversity and long-term wellbeing matters here and bringing the right people together to turn ideas into practical outcomes that genuinely benefit Brighton & Hove's residents and businesses. More information about the role

Brighton researchers develop early arthritis detector

🩻 Researchers at the University of Brighton are developing a breakthrough sensor that could detect osteoarthritis before irreversible damage occurs—a genuine medical first. Led by Professor Katherine Staines and supported by £107,824 from Arthritis UK, the 14-month project adapts advanced sensing technology to identify tiny chemical changes in joint fluid that signal early disease stages. Watch the full report on ITV News.

Currently, osteoarthritis—affecting over 10 million UK residents—is often diagnosed only after significant damage has already happened. This clever sensor could change that game entirely, enabling earlier intervention and better disease monitoring. The team will test the technology using synovial fluid (the fluid that cushions joints) before potentially rolling it out to clinics. If it works, millions with joint problems could see dramatically improved quality of life. A true breakthrough for those of us who have suffered from osteoarthritis and joint issues 🤘

Tents transformed into fashion collection

⛺️ British music festivals abandon a staggering 250,000 tents annually—that's 900 tonnes of landfill chaos. But product design student Tilly Lawless decided to turn this rubbish into treasure. Her project, Bâche, transforms abandoned festival tent fabric into stylish clothing, proving sustainability doesn't have to be a drab affair.

Lawless reckons we need to stop viewing waste as worthless and start seeing it as valuable material. Her course leader agrees it's exactly the innovative thinking the design world desperately needs. The work’s were on display at the university's Architecture and Design Graduate Show until yesterday. Excellent work Tilly.
