What’s the Scoop

Brighton businesses dress the city

🎈This summer, over 500 Brilliant Brighton businesses are brightening up the city centre with colourful bunting, floral hanging baskets and new artist-designed banners from May to September. Brighton illustrator Donough O’Malley has created vibrant “We Love Brighton” banners celebrating iconic landmarks, seaside treats, carousels, Pride, music and even the city’s cheeky seagulls. His artwork will hang above Western Road, North Street, Bond Street and Market Street, while bunting decorates North Laine and The Lanes.

Organised by the Brighton Business Improvement District, the campaign aims to boost the fun, festive feel of the city for residents, visitors and festival-goers alike, signalling the start of Brighton’s busy summer season and celebrating everything we love about the city. Party on.

Breaking down barriers in women’s rugby

🏉 Manjinder Nagra, the first Sikh woman to represent England at rugby, is now driving change in Brighton & Hove sport. After breaking new ground with England Students in the 1990s, she faced cultural expectations to give up the game, but instead used her experience to fuel a legal career and a passion for inclusion. At Hove Rugby Club she founded the girls’ section in 2016, growing it from a handful of players to over 80, and now also runs mixed walking rugby and a multicultural women’s walking rugby group.

Supporting the council’s Sport Lifts Her Higher campaign, she champions sport’s role in building confidence and providing role models for girls. Beyond rugby, she’s a global ambassador for the Sikh Games, serves on the Cricket Discipline Panel, and has become English national champion in sumo, earning selection for England at the European Sumo Championships.
