Gooooood morning, Brighton. Apparently we’re in for a corker this weekend, not that this morning’s sky gives any hint of that. Hey ho! I trust the weatherman. Also the World Cup is now officially in full swing after the opener last night. For those of you who couldn’t give two hoots; there’s only 37 days to go until it’s all over and you can get a seat in the pub again 🤘

What’s the Scoop

Brighton marina development

⛵️ Brighton Marina is set for some much needed significant development. The council unveiled its seafront blueprint last Friday, with the Marina being a key focus. This is great news for the area as it can sometimes feel rather forgotten about and unloved.

The plans include 1,000 new homes by 2030, a 5,000-square-metre retail space, and 3,500 square metres of leisure and recreation development.

The Marina has faced challenges historically due to poor public realm and limited seafront access. However, recent eastern seafront improvements have enhanced connectivity, creating what the council describes as an "ideal moment to invest." The Seafront Development Board, comprising industry leaders, believes continued investment will help realise the area's potential. The government has expressed interest in the seafront vision.

Funding will come from various sources including government grants and philanthropy, with projects funded on an individual basis. More on the BHCC Seafront Prospectus

Albion’s FA Cup journey - An Inspiration for generations

⚽️ Well folks, Albion's women's team may not have won the FA Cup final at Wembley, but apparently they won something better—the hearts of thousands of young girls across the city.

The Seagulls faced Manchester City in front of nearly 44,000 fans in what was their first-ever Women's FA Cup final appearance. Sure, they lost, but local council leader Bella Sankey insists the real victory is inspiration. Over half of girls say watching elite female athletes motivates them to play, and Brighton's running at the FA Cup final apparently just wrote the ultimate permission slip.

The Brighton & Hove Albion Foundation has already delivered 70,000 hours of girls' football in a year, with 500+ local girls regularly attending sessions. The council's "Sport Lifts Her Higher" campaign aims to make Brighton the UK capital of female sports participation.

So while the trophy went to Manchester, Brighton's girls got something arguably more valuable—role models who actually made it to Wembley.👏

Beach cleanup blues

😢 20 tonnes of rubbish removed from Brighton beach in one weekend. That's right: enough garbage to fill a small block of flats, all because people apparently think the seafront is their personal bin.

During the May bank holiday, thousands descended on Brighton's beaches for the obligatory sun tan and a few drinks, which would have been lovely except the majority decided to leave their litter behind like unwanted party guests.

The council had provided 54 refurbished bins, extra collection crews and van teams hunting for side waste but this was an unprecedented amount of rubbish.

Deputy Leader Tim Rowkins issued a polite but firm message: use the bins provided, or take your rubbish home. Revolutionary concept, I know. The city loves visitors, but not their rubbish. So this weekend, pack out what you pack in, people. It's not complicated! Useful links - BBQ bin map / Report an overfilled bin
